About Bastar Dokra
Bastar Dokra is a traditional tribal metal craft from the Bastar region of Chhattisgarh, known for its distinctive rustic character, intricate detailing and timeless handmade appeal. Crafted using the ancient Lost-Wax Casting (Cire Perdue) technique, Dokra artisans transform wax, clay and molten metal into beautiful figurines, animals, tribal musicians, deities, lamps and decorative objects.
Each piece is individually handcrafted by skilled artisans, making every Dokra creation unique in its form, texture and detailing.
A Craft with Ancient Roots
Dokra is one of India's traditional metal-casting crafts with roots that can be traced back centuries. The craft is closely associated with indigenous artisan communities and has been passed down through generations.
In Bastar, the craft has developed its own distinctive identity, often reflecting the region's tribal culture, folklore, wildlife, traditional occupations and connection with nature. Bastar Dokra is therefore not just a decorative craft, but also a beautiful expression of the cultural heritage of central India.
How Bastar Dokra is Made
Bastar Dokra is traditionally created through the Lost-Wax Casting technique, a meticulous process involving several stages:
1. Designing the form
The artisan first creates the basic form of the desired figurine or object.
2. Wax modelling
Beeswax or other suitable wax is shaped and detailed by hand. Fine wax threads may be added to create the characteristic patterns and textures of Dokra.
3. Clay coating
The wax model is carefully covered with layers of clay to create a mould. The mould is then dried and prepared for casting.
4. Heating the mould
When the mould is heated, the wax melts and flows out through specially created channels. This leaves behind a cavity in the shape of the original design.
5. Molten metal casting
Molten metal, traditionally an alloy containing brass, is poured into the mould to fill the cavity.
6. Breaking and finishing
After cooling, the clay mould is carefully broken to reveal the metal sculpture. The artisan then removes excess material, cleans, files and finishes the piece by hand.
This process means that the original mould generally cannot be reused in exactly the same way, making every cast piece distinct.
